History of the puzzle[edit]

Mapping of letters to numbers in a telephone keypad was standardised in the 1960s. The mapping is often used as a mnemonic for phone numbers. [1] This type can be seen as a combination of such mapping technique and Acrostic puzzles.

This culturally-independent version doesn't make sense if the puzzle was solely presented. However, the actual puzzle in WPC 2017/Round 23 was a part of the larger puzzle with a shared list, therefore leaving a lot of unusued words.
