Determine the number of given shapes in the picture.

Rule variations[edit]

There are mainly two types of puzzles falls upon this rule.

  • Given shapes can be substituted by "triangles", "equilateral triangles", "rectangles", "squares", etc. The puzzle is more combinatorial. Or,
  • Given shapes can be substituted by "identical shapes". The puzzle is more observational.

History of the puzzle[edit]

A puzzle that asks to count the number of equilateral triangles in the given diagram is present in Sam Loyd's (USA) Cyclopedia of 5000 Puzzles, Tricks, and Conundrums (With Answers).
